How to Restore Antique Chairs

Antique chairs are a wonderful part of our past that can easily be fit into our modern homes. These chairs can usually be found at an auction or even a yard sale for hardly anything and with a little work can be brought back into a lovely piece of furniture. A beautiful wooden antique chair is a great way to bring part of the past into your home or office. You can purchase one for a very reasonable price and transform it into a gleaming spectacle.

Restoring your chair

Restoring your chair into what it once was will take some work, but can be done with little difficulty. All you have to do is follow a few steps and you will soon have a piece of furniture that you can be proud of. Before beginning any project, make sure that you are in a well ventilated area. The stripper and varnish that will be used can be toxic if inhaled in a closed in area.

The first thing that you will want to do is strip all of the old paint or stain that has been applied to the chair over the years. You can buy an easy to use stripper from any home improvement store. This may come in a kit with every tool you need to get the job done, or you can buy the tools individually.

After you have stripped down as much of the paint as you can then you will need to sand the entire surface of the chair. This is the most time consuming and painstaking process. The important thing is that you cover every inch of the chair with fine grade sandpaper. Once you have finished stripping and sanding you will be able to begin your transformation. This is the part where you can choose paint, stain, and the type of finish that you want. Make sure that whatever you choose will fit in with your decor.

When you are finished you will have the chair you wanted at a fraction of the price, and the satisfaction of knowing that you did it yourself.

Care Tips For Teak Chairs

By Kristen Duwe

Anyone in need of outdoor furniture should always consider teak because of its beauty and durability. The combination of teak's beauty, comfort, and strength is rarely matched by any other piece of outdoor furniture. Authentic teak chairs can often carry a heavy price tag so there are a few guidelines you should follow if you want your teak chairs to be like new each year.

1) Buy Some Supplies

Although teak is extremely water and weather resistant, it is known to go through some changes when it has been sitting outside for a long time but these changes mostly effect the look and not the strength. These pieces of furniture are originally a warm honey color and after months to years of sun and rain exposure, they will start to acquire a grayish-silver color. This silver color is often seen as beautiful or classic looking, so some prefer to simply leave teak chairs to change on their own time.

When left out in the elements, outdoor teak chairs will also start to feel dry to the touch because the oils have run out. Restoring the oils will restore the natural feel of the teak chairs.

Whatever supplies you decide to buy, always ask an expert where the teak-specific products and shop around for the best prices.

2) Clean Teak Chairs Regularly

For those who would like to keep the natural warm colors and smooth surface, some cleaning and sealing supplies will be necessary. Even if your teak chairs have weathered to gray, it is fairly easy to restore the natural original colors.

Cleaning teak should be a part of your yard work routines because this prevents the chairs from becoming stained or ruined. Specific teak cleaners can be purchased at a home improvements establishment and when cleaning your furniture, always use a brush or soft cloth and rub in the direction of the grain. Be sure to never use steel wool to lift stains from outdoor teak chairs because the metal will get stuck in the wood and rust will most likely occur, which could cause a lot of damage to the colors. Also, a complete rinsing and drying process will need to be done before applying any product because dirt and mold present during the process of applying oil will make your job a lot more frustrating. Always be sure that you have dried the teak completely, preferably outside, before adding oils.

3) Find Out What Is Right For You and Your Chairs

There are many different products available specifically made to care for teak furniture and the process is usually completely up to the owner of the teak chairs. One optional supply is a brightening solution which is applied with a soft rag or brush to the teak chair to give it extra shine. Others like to simply apply the oil and let it dry.

Teak oil should be applied after completing the cleaning and brightening process of the teak chairs. This process is fairly easy even for people who do not usually seal outdoor furniture because the oil will be absorbed by the wood and the teak chair with ease. You will know when to stop when the oil begins to form little puddles on the flat surfaces.

As always, a routine cleaning and sealing schedule every couple months is recommended to keep the wood looking and feeling fresh each season. It is also worth mentioning that all outdoor furniture including teak chairs will benefit from being put under a cover or in storage because no wood will last a long time if it is sitting in a yard which is collecting a lot of moisture.

How to Clean a Leather Chair

By Luke Berg

Something that people don't understand about leather chairs is that they need to be taken care of on a regular basis, unlike wooden chairs. These treatments are simple, and fairly quick, but don't let that fact stray you from doing them.

First and foremost, touch your chair. Does is feel soft? It should, and your fingers should slide easily along with it. If it doesn't, it is time to treat it. Now check your chair's instruction manual. Many high end brands of chairs have very specified instructions on how to care for their chairs such as a leather armchair, leather office chair, or leather dining chairs.

Make sure to keep dust off the chair. This is important, as dust carries many oily bacteria that can damage leather chairs. Dust your chair once a day or at least once a week if possible.

Check to see if your chair is water resistant. If the leather on the chair is shiny, it most likely is protected from liquids. However, some chairs are non-finished, and these should not be cleaned with liquid products. Whether or not it is water-resistant, always use caution when dealing with leather.

For non-finished leather chairs, use an art-gum eraser and erase the dirt from the chair. This is essentially the only way to clean this type of chair. You might have to clean the entire chair this way. For water-resistant chairs, use the eraser to clean up minor dirt spots.

Wash water-proof chairs with mild soap such as Ivory. Use a bucket of room temperature water and rub the soap together with your hands in it. Make sure it is not hot or cold; it must be room temperature or the soap will not clean properly.

Make sure to clean the entire chair thoroughly with a clean, damp cloth that has been soaked in the soapy water. If you don't clean certain parts, the chair may look splotchy. Rinse it off with another damp cloth. Now dry the leather chair with another clean cloth.

Apply a leather cream to your chair once you have finished cleaning it. The chair must be clean when you apply the cream or any dirt or oils that were on the chair can become bonded with it. Now you are done! Enjoy your newly cleaned chair.

Types of Chairs

By David Urmann

Chair is a piece of furniture comprising of legs, backrest and some with armrests. There are chairs that can sit one person, while others can hold more than one. The latter is more aptly referred to as a sofa.

Chairs usually have four legs, but more modern versions have futuristic designs with three legs, or the backrest extending to the floor to act as the leg.

As more and more newer designs come out, and the selection becoming more varied, it is good to back to the basics in choosing a chair. Consider the weight, size, stack ability, durability, maintenance and artistic design.

Chairs are matched according to use. They are made specifically for different purposes. The chairs seen at home are generally more relaxed and laid back. They usually come in varied colors and designs. On the other hand, chairs seen in the office are expected to be more formal, stiff and often in earth colors.

Chairs are greatly varied that it will be difficult to enumerate all of them. There are chairs used for a specific sport, or a specific place. But for starters, the more common types are the ones we see at home and at work.

One of these is a rocking chair. It is also called "rocker" because it moves back and forth to rock the user. It has two curved or arched bands of wood at the bottom, one attached on the two left legs and the other one is attached on the two right legs. The chair starts to rock back and forth when the user shifts weight or gently pushes the chair with his weight. It also rocks by itself when a user sits on it until the center of gravity is achieved hence giving the user a comfortable sitting position.

The hanging bubble chair was designed in 1968, a revolutionary hanging chair that turned the world of design upside down. It was an original creation of Eero Aarnio of Finland. This extraordinary chair hangs from the ceiling and is made of transparent acrylic and stainless or chrome steel. It can be hanged at any height and provided with six foot chain and snap hooks. It has removable cushions included and furnished with white or silver leather or other colored fabrics.

The modern bubble chair is very impressive with its special acoustic. It seems to absorb the sound to make the user feel isolated when seated on it. It shields the user from any external noise or disturbance. Eero Aarnio was among the first modern furniture designers to use plastic material in industrial design. Plastic is more flexible to design to different shapes and colors.

The ball chair is made up of fiberglass with lacquer coated steel base. It comes with a removable high-density foam cushions and high grade wool blend interior. It also provides a very pleasant isolated feeling. It is also sometimes called Globe Chair, designed using the simple geometric shape of a ball, yet providing a warm and quiet space to relax. The chair can be turned around on its base giving the user many different views of the outside world.

The meditation pod is a three-leaf chair placed at the center of the living room. It has a metal frame and padded in polyurethane foam. This chair can accommodate one to two persons. The Australian designer Steven Blaess is the brain behind this contemporary chair.

A sofa also called couch is one of the most common chairs. It can seat two to five persons, depending on how long the seating area is. It is often made out of different fabrics and designs to match the tone in your room. It can serve as a gathering place for families. Other times, it is alternately used as a bed also.
